District Curriculum

The Laurens-Marathon elementary school (K-5) utilizes a self-contained classroom arrangement. Emphasis is placed on the individual needs of each student, thus allowing each child to develop to his/her greatest potential. Our dedicated and experienced staff utilizes an integrated "holistic" approach to learning which emphasizes the connections between subject areas thus adding meaning and relevancy to learning. Individual, small group, large group, and cooperative learning strategies are utilized as instructional practices.

Classroom instruction is supported by programs in special education, Title I reading and math, talented and gifted education, and guidance and individual counseling. Specialized teachers provide instruction in art, music, and physical education. Our students also receive instruction in a foreign language (Spanish) as a part of our comprehensive educational program. Our quality curriculum is being continually reviewed and modified to meet the developmentally appropriate needs of our students as we approach the future.

The Laurens-Marathon middle school utilizes a departmentalized approach for delivery of the curriculum. Basic core classes include language arts (including reading and spelling), mathematics, science, and social studies, physical education, vocal and instrumental music, talented and gifted education and our diverse exploratory program all add to our comprehensive curriculum. The middle school program offers students a challenging well-rounded "core curriculum" as well as providing students with the opportunities necessary for social, emotional, and interest development. In addition to the academic programs offered, a wide variety of extracurricular activities are available.

Our basic philosophy is to provide each student with the necessary support and assistance needed to guarantee individual student success. A modern library/media center and up-to-date computer lab supports the goals of our academic programs. Current materials and resources are utilized in the delivery of our instructional programs.

Students may also enjoy participation in sports and other extracurricular activities. These activities include football, volleyball, basketball, track, wrestling, baseball, and softball. Through these activities we hope to teach and develop leadership, responsibility, a good work ethic, and good sportsmanship that the students may use later in life.
