District Curriculum
The Laurens-Marathon elementary school (PK-6) utilizes a self-contained classroom arrangement. Emphasis is placed on the individual needs of each student, thus allowing each child to develop to his/her greatest potential. Our dedicated and experienced staff utilizes an integrated "holistic" approach to learning which emphasizes the connections between subject areas thus adding meaning and relevancy to learning. Individual, small group, large group, and cooperative learning strategies are utilized as instructional practices.

Classroom instruction is supported by programs in special education, Title I reading and math, talented and gifted education, and guidance and individual counseling. Specialized teachers provide instruction in art, music, STEM, and physical education. Our quality curriculum is being continually reviewed and modified to meet the developmentally appropriate needs of our students as we approach the future.

At Laurens-Marathon, our K-6 reading curriculum is designed to build strong foundational literacy skills while fostering a love for reading. In grades K-2, we implement the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) phonics program to provide explicit and systematic phonics instruction. This is paired with the EL Education Reading Curriculum in grades K-2, which helps students grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers through high-quality, knowledge-building texts and engaging learning experiences.

In grade 3, our students transition to the Wonders reading curriculum. This program offers a comprehensive approach to reading instruction, supporting continued development in vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. It also allows for a smooth bridge between foundational skills and more complex literacy tasks. In grades 4-6, we return to the EL Education Reading Curriculum, which emphasizes collaborative discussions, independent reading, and real-world applications of literacy skills. Students are encouraged to think deeply and express themselves confidently through meaningful projects and writing opportunities.

For mathematics instruction, our entire K-6 building uses the iReady Math Curriculum. This program blends teacher-led instruction with individualized digital practice, allowing students to progress at their own pace while receiving targeted support. The iReady approach ensures that all learners build conceptual understanding, fluency, and problem-solving skills aligned with state standards.
